barbecue

I tried something new on the smoker today.  Pork Tenderloin.  I put on a dry rub last night, then let it do its thing in the fridge for 13 hours.  This morning I put it on the smoker.  After 3 hours it was done.  I have sliced it and put it in the crock pot for the potluck at church tomorrow.  I really hope that it doesn't cook too much in the crock pot and dry out.  I'll serve it with 2 kinds of barbecue sauce that people can add. The sauces are from Knackie's, who catered Craig & Lindsay's wedding rehearsal dinner.  I need to get busy making something else for the potluck yet.

Warren is down at Tony's today, and I've been puttering around here, doing a little housework.  Nothing too exciting.  Tomorrow is the potluck at church in honor of Warren's parents, Harvey & Gladys.  Next week looks to hold more fall projects for us.  Can you believe it will be November already?  Don't forget to set your clocks back tonight!

not fun

Its not fun chasing cows and calves around the yard in the dark...  Its not fun checking and fixing fence in the dark...Thank God it wasn't colder.  Thank God for Warren coming home early.  He rescued me from having to chase the cows in Again!

Dodge Ball!

Lustre doesn't have enough girls this year to have a volleyball team, much like many small schools in the area.  As a result, the junior class doesn't have the fund raiser of game concessions.  Sunday they hosted a dodge ball tournament with concessions and a spaghetti supper for a fund raiser.  There were 9 teams, and a good time had by all.  Warren was one of the refs for the games.  Each game lasted about 1-2 minutes and was very fast paced, kind of hard to get decent pictures.  My camera was having some focusing/lighting issues, so my apologies at the quality of some of the pics.  Hope it gives you an idea of the fun, tho.  I did try taking some video of the Olfert Jolly Dodgers team (best name, I think), but its not working.

Warren is working down at Tony & Amy's today.  They have been insulating his garage walls and putting up OSB.  It will sure be nice for Tony to do some work (and play) in the winter now.  The hopper bottom bin Tony has been working on is in the paint stage now, and looks great!

I'm trying a new recipe today for some beef short ribs.  Its smelling good in the house!  I need to get some potatoes boiling for some garlic mashed potatoes to go with it.  I'm home alone today, and wouldn't you know it, I had some cows and calves out in the yard.  yeah!!!  not really...

Sunday is a farewell potluck meal after the morning church service for Harvey & Gladys, Warren's parents.  They have attended our church for many, many years, and now will attend the church that Tony &  Amy go to in Glasgow.

Easter 1985

This set of photos has been set out on my work table, staring at me, just waiting to be put into a layout for weeks!  I finally got it finished yesterday.  Tony was 4 months old at Easter.  We gave him his first Easter basket before church in the morning.  After church, we went down to Wolf Point for dinner at Mom & Dad's for a Heidner family get together.  Dave & Jeanette were there also, with their baby, William.  Fun times.

Warren has been fighting a nasty cold, but finally started feeling better last night.  Hopefully he will be back to his normal, joking self soon.  Tuesday we got our flu shots, and Thursday we gave the calves their fall shots, so they will be ready to ship within the next couple of weeks.  We should all be good for the winter!

Tony has been busy in the shop this week building hopper bottoms for grain bins.  Darin Pankratz has been working with him on the project.  If you know of anyone looking for hopper bottoms, give Tony a call.

Scrapping again!

I finally sat down today and did more than just look at the next batch of photos to scrap for our family album and Tony's baby album.  I actually did a page for each of our albums.  I am a long way from getting his first year done in time for the birth of their baby in just a month, but I'll just plug away on it as I can.    The photos are a mixture of family and friends holding Tony.  Two are from the first time he went to my parents' home when he was 7 weeks old, and my mom and aunt held him.  The other photo is when he was 3 months old.  Warren and I were playing in an alumni volleyball tournament and Tony stayed with Edith Klaassen.  She was his first babysitter other than family.  John Chisham, one of the dorm kids, is holding him.

The page for our family album, which Warren and I keep.

We've been keeping busy around here the past couple of weeks since I updated the blog.  I finally finished canning for the year.  I canned the last batch of tomatoes, gave a few boxes away, and kept enough for fresh eating here at home.  We've had some rain and snow showers, and it sure feels like fall around here.  We had a couple weeks of cold weather, with daytime highs seldom getting above freezing.  Sunday it started to warm up a bit, and is more pleasant, although you still need a jacket outside.

Harvey & Gladys have moved into town now, although they also stay out at the farm off and on.  We have been doing some entertaining, which we enjoy a lot.

Accordion Album

I forgot to post pictures of the accordion album I made for our pastor recently for Pastor Appreciation Month.   The photos are from Morro Bay, California.

Hodge Podge.... Is that one word or two?

Its been rather busy here the last week or two.  The weather has certainly changed.  We had our first snow flurries this morning, and its been super windy, making it feel even colder.  The guys finished a big fall project yesterday - putting new shingles on Harvey & Gladys' house here on the farm.  They worked for about 3 days on it, and I had a number of guys here to feed noon meals to.  The new roof looks pretty spiffy.    Here's a few pictures of the process.

Sunday was our annual Harvest Festival at church.  Dick Nichols and his wife were here from Gettysburg, SD.  Dick spoke in 2 services on Sunday, and also Monday and Tuesday night services.  The church was decorated beautifully, and we served over 180 people a ham dinner with all the trimmings at noon on Sunday.  I was in charge of the meal, and had a bit of a worry as the power went out a couple of times.  The breaker at the power pole needs a little help, it happened in May for the graduation potluck too.  We made it work, plugging only 2 of the 4 roasters in at a time, and rotating them every half hour.  The coffee got done and the food was hot.  whew!   Pastor Frank showed his annual harvest video during the morning service, which is always good.

I canned a huge batch of salsa again today.  I'm not taking more pictures of salsa, not even counting the jars this time.  ugh!  Still have boxes and boxes of tomatoes sitting in the entryway of the house.  Here are a couple of pictures from last week when we picked the tomatoes and peppers that were still out in the garden.  The forecast was for cold weather, so I decided it was time to quit messing with covering the plants with tarps, and just pick whatever was still out there....  There was a LOT.  A couple of neighbor girls had come over to visit, and they were great, pitching right in to help out.

I made a gift album, but I'm not sure if the person its for reads this blog or not, so will post pictures of it later.  It felt so good to scrapbook a bit!  I would love to do more, but its just too busy right now.  This coming Saturday we have a family memorial service for one of Warren's aunts.  The service will be at our church, with a family gathering here afterwards.  The next couple of days will be spent cleaning up the house and getting ready for guests.    The Pampered Chef boxes came today.  Warren helped me get the orders all sorted and ready for delivery.  Its always fun to see what everyone ordered and see the products in person, instead of the catalog.  I got a lot of new items myself, and have found room for most of it.

Talk about a hodge podge of news!  Sorry for the disjointed update.  :)  Hope it kind of made sense.
